Clinical software maker Orion Systems has just scored its biggest ever deal - a $10 million contract with the New South Wales Government.
The business is part of an A$200 million project that aims to inject efficiency into the healthcare systems of the state.
Orion is in a consortium with integrator LogicaCMG and Orion possession HealthLink International to build an electronic health records system called EHR*Net for the NSW health department.
EHR*Net will store summary electronic health records for people in New South Wales that can be accessed by clinicians, GPs and other healthcare providers to improve the efficiency, safety and quality of NSW healthcare.
At present, most of Australia's healthcare records are stored on paper at a variety of locations.
Orion chief executive Ian McCrae said the deal was the most significant for his company.
Orion staved off the likes of Cerner, Accenture, IBA Health and IBA.
McCrae said the company would have to employ up to 20 people in Australia to implement the project.
The system will be initially piloted in two sites - a Chronic Disease Management System (CDMS) in the Hunter Valley region and the Child Health Information Network (CHIN) in the greater western area of Sydney.
These pilot sites are due for completion in July next year and will operate for about 15 months before a statewide rollout of the system begins.
McCrae said around six million people were covered, making it one of the largest health data bases in the region.
The NSW Health vision was for all patients to have access to the system by 2010, which might include individuals having web access through a portal to their entire medical records.
