The New Zealand dollar has lost more than a cent against the American currency and is down against other major trading partners.
At one point the dollar fell to 65.58 US cents, an 18 month low. It has also reached a two year low against the Australian dollar.
Traders say overseas investors are selling the kiwi because of the prospect of higher interest rates in the US, Europe and Japan. The sell-off also coincides with new forecasts of lower economic growth in the coming financial year.
The dollar is currently trading at 65.62 US cents and 88.58 Australian cents.
