Local radio host Will Johnston, of The Hits Bay of Plenty, is undertaking Sports, Bethlehem, with certified personal trainer Ben Spencely.
How many weeks are you into the challenge?
Eight weeks.
What training do you do?
We change it up every couple of weeks 'cause no one wants to go to the gym and do the same thing every time. A combination of strength training (heavy weight, low reps) and conditioning/toning work (lower weight, lots of reps - high heart rate stuff)!
What are best and worst bits?
I love the strength stuff because I'm an intrinsically lazy person and the less reps I have to do of anything is always appealing. Although I also see the most instant results in the strength area, I can up my weights quicker.
The toughest part is the thing we do at the end of each workout called a "finisher". It's exactly that, it finishes you off. But it's ok because that's what really burns fat!
Is your trainer, Ben, mean?
No, Ben is exceptional. We get on really well, basically because he is a normal human being, not a personal trainer stereotype that talks in motivational metaphors! Don't get me wrong, he works my ass off and at times I feel I might die a little, but it's good for me.
Have you done any classes, for example, Aqua or yoga or Pilates? I've done an RPM class, it hurt. The instructor was lovely ... but also a little sick in the head, because as it hurt more she seemed happier!
