The Tauranga Women's Refuge is celebrating its 35th birthday with an 80s themed birthday this Saturday, June 20.
The refuge was officially incorporated on June 17, 1980, and began with women offering their homes to other women and children affected by domestic violence to operating a safe house chain, with phone calls to each other in the night.
Today it has eight staff, a comprehensive assessment and crisis intervention service operating 24/7, a safe house, a community office offering a wide range of women's and children's programmes, counselling, a PHO health service for clients, Triple P parenting and crisis intervention to women and children who remain in their own homes.

Refuge workers sick of verbal abuse
Tauranga Women's Refuge manager Angie Warren-Clarke said the 80s themed night would be a blast from the past with entertainment from local group, On the Rocks.
