Uplifting Ngai Te Rangi history is how Auckland-based artist Tracey Tawhiao describes her Rules of Engagement exhibition in Goddard's Arcade.
"I'm enlivening ideas that are often buried," she said at last night's opening.
"The wars in Tauranga were famous because everyone was so gentlemanly. The Rules of Engagement as written by Henare Taratoa to Governor George Grey in 1864 before the Battle of Gate Pa tell us that there was a sense of decency even though the two sides were fighting."

The exhibition developed from Tawhiao's work designing a stage set for Ria Hall's Tauranga Arts Festival show on October 28.
