Katikati is the place to be, with a range of guests rolling in. Prime Minister John Key walked part of the mainstreet; Bay of Plenty Steamers' mascot Steamy visited schools and pre-schools drumming up support for next Friday's big game in Katikati and Cameron Petley - the man who caught the hearts of the nation on MasterChef New Zealand, is cooking up a storm at Fantail Lodge Country Estate on Saturday. Chris Steel reports.
Prime Minister John Key made a brief stopover in Katikati last Thursday, missing out by a day on being introduced to the Bay of Plenty Steamers' mascot, Steamy. The blue and gold character popped into Katikati the following day to drum up support and check out Moore Park for next Friday's big game against North Harbour.
Mr Key was relaxed as he strolled, chatted and shook hands with members of the public on Katikati's main street. He was joined by Scott Simpson, new National Party candidate for Coromandel in town for a function at the Katikati Memorial Hall.
Friday's visit by Steamy drew smiles, screams, cuddles and high-fives as he visited schools and pre-schools. Some younger children were quite reserved, but warmed to Steamy after a short time. Others took no encouragement and some didn't want to let him go. He also visited companies of supporters and sponsors of Katikati Rugby and Sports Club, including the Katikati Advertiser, but due to wet weather couldn't get to everyone.
Lester Gray, Katikati Rugby and Sports Club president says the field at Moore Park is in great condition with final preparations almost complete.
"The club's been doing a lot of work in preparation for the game and I hope the town really enjoys it.
