Tauranga's HEB Construction has won a $1.75 million contract to upgrade the pump station needed to handle run-off from the motorway to be built between Papamoa and Paengaroa.
It is one of six support projects which precede the construction of the Tauranga Eastern Link. Work on the road is expected to start next year.
The pump station discharges stormwater from the lower Kaituna catchment into the Kaituna River. The upgrade is needed to handle the increased run-off from the new road.
HEB Construction will build another inlet and outlet, install a new pump, and upgrade a power transformer.
Transport Agency Bay of Plenty director Harry Wilson says the contract is another important step in paving the way for the main contract.
Other support projects include: extending Truman Lane so the Mangatawa Lane exit to State Highway 2 can be closed; stormwater upgrades around Mangatawa; and extending Kaituna Rd.
Two of the support projects are being managed in partnership with the Tauranga City Council, including the relocation and upgrade of a bulk water main.
The agency expects to appoint the main highway construction contractor later this month.
