A man who likes instant results, Nathan's can-do attitude to looking for work has given him a much higher profile than some in the job market - standing on the side of the road with a placard with job wanted, his qualifications, experience and telephone number on it.
Laid off the first week of March, last Monday Nathan began his search for new work, advertising himself on the roadside near the entrance to Tauranga Harbour Bridge Marina.
He met with some quick success, picking up work with Dial-A-Driver, but is still looking for something else.
"Looking on the internet takes too long," he says.
"You have to wait, and then people don't get back to you or tell you you don't have the experience - it's an employer's market at the moment."
It's not actually true in Nathan's case as he has plenty of experience - as a painter, roofer and fitness instructor and he has an exercise science and health degree. He is also a former New Zealand power-lifting champion.
"But it seems that's not enough."
His sign says he will consider any job, and he says that he really doesn't want to be on the dole.
"If you go for a job and they ask you what you are doing now and you say you are on the dole, it works against you - and you aren't going to get a better life on the dole, you can only just survive.
"Then again, why would you come off the dole just to get the minimum wage."
Nathan plans to try his luck in Queenstown as winter draws closer, and hopes he might be able to settle there permanently.
As he chats to the Bay News, there are a few toots from those driving by, then a van pulls up and the driver beckons Nathan over.
He later says he has had very little luck in getting work.
"There have been about five people who have stopped, but there hasn't been anything related to my degree - it's more odd jobs - but I kind of expected that. One girl stopped and talked to me about a security job.
"I emailed my CV, so that was like applying for a job anyway - but it was good of her to stop.
"Another guy stopped and asked me a lot of questions but I haven't heard anything," Nathan says.
He has been to Turret Rd and next to the Harbour Bridge Marina four times each, and is beginning to wonder if he needs to change his strategy.
