Counties Manukau Police have launched an investigation following reports of vandalism at Papakura Cemetery.
Damaged headstones and memorials have been scattered throughout a section of the cemetery.
Police have attended the scene and will be working with Auckland Countil in relation to a number of families who have discovered the graves of their loved ones damaged.
Counties Manukau Police South Area Prevention Manager Inspector Mark Rowbottom says the discovery of the damage is devastating to families.
"We have heard from a number of families who have found gravestones damaged over the weekend," says Inspector Rowbottom.
