Although he is keen on all sports, this is Hansen's first foray into greyhound racing.
Hansen is a self-confessed city slicker, born and bred in Napier, although his father represented New Zealand in equestrian in his younger years.
"When we finished with HOY I got a job as general manager of Auckland-based Equine Productions and was heavily involved in bringing a large and popular Australian equestrian event to New Zealand. It launches here in November."
Equitana Melbourne is a long-running equestrian extravaganza that has attracted much attention across the ditch.
And under the Hansen family guidance Equitana Auckland promises to bring to New Zealand a level of equestrian entertainment a like no other. The ASB Showgrounds will light up for the inaugural November 23-26 event. The event will bring a raft of superstars in various disciplines.
But then the focus changed for Hansen and his Wairarapa-born wife, Alicia, when their first child, Blake, was born.
"Our son is only a month old and we decided to find a really good environment to bring him up. I handed the Equine Production reins over to my father and I applied for this job.
"The Wanganui Greyhound Racing Club already has a very good reputation around the country and in Australia as one of the most successful and busiest racing venues in New Zealand and it has the racing dates in place."
Hansen said Whanganui greyhound racing had all the ingredients with which to bake a larger pie.
"My aim is to build on what we already have here at Hatrick. I am only in my second week on the job, so still very much a learning curve, but I'm excited and passionate about the future," Hansen said.
Club president Bill Hodgson said it was Hansen's passion and extensive background in event promotion that gave him the nod over a large group of applicants.
"We had 20 or more applications from all over the place, locally and nationwide," Hodgson said.
"Andrew is a very affable guy with great experience in event promotion and that, along with his passion, was the main reason he got the job. I'm certain he will do an excellent job as manager," he said.
