More than 30 young Auckland sportsmen and women will tonight receive Government-backed scholarships.
The recipients of the Prime Minister's scholarships - among the 275 being awarded nationwide - will receive between $3000 and $10,000.
The awards are part of the Government's $1 million commitment towards sport and education.
Among the young athletes to receive awards from the Minister of Education and Sport, Trevor Mallard, will be pole vaulter Jenni Dryburgh, who is also studying for a Bachelor of Science degree at Auckland University.
Cyclist Chris Boersen, a Herald Junior Sports Award winner last year, is another who is juggling study (for a Bachelor of Commerce at Massey University) with his training.
The scholarships - being awarded for the first time - cover course fees and living allowances.
