The secretary-MP romance that caused an uproar before Christmas is over, the publicity apparently too much to bear.
News broke in December of the sacking of Labour MP Clayton Cosgrove's parliamentary secretary, Elizabeth Brown, reportedly because of her relationship with New Zealand First MP Craig McNair, 27.
The story made headlines and caused scenes such as Mr Cosgrove sprinting around Parliament's corridors to escape reporters.
Ms Brown starts a new job in Conservation Minister Chris Carter's office next week - her career intact but her relationship over.
A source confirmed Mr McNair and Ms Brown had ended their short-lived relationship.
While apart during the Christmas break they reviewed and decided to end it, blaming intense media pressure before Christmas.
Neither Ms Brown nor Mr McNair could be reached for comment.
