An 81-year-old woman had to be cut from the wreckage after her car and a van collided at the Hastings St North and Albert St junction yesterday .
Sergeant Kevin Stewart said the crash occurred about 2.45pm.
He said the 81-year-old's car and a van had collided at the intersection, and then the car had crashed into a power pole.
Police were investigating the incident and driving charges were likely.
The woman had sustained lower leg injuries and fire crews had to use hydraulic rescue equipment to cut her from the wreck. A hospital spokeswoman said last night the 81-year-old was in a serious condition.
