Prison escapee Dean Michael Vincent was sentenced to two years prison on Friday in the Rotorua District Court, to be served on the end of his current four-year sentence.
Vincent was sentenced to four years prison for burglary and theft charges in the Whakatane District Court on March 29 last year.
After serving less than two months of that sentence at Waikeria Prison, Vincent escaped through a prison kitchen window on May 7 and made his way on foot and by hitchhiking to Rotorua and then into the bush around Lakes Rotoiti, Rotoma and Rotoehu.
He hid and lived in the bush for almost a year, breaking into and burgling houses in the area to gather supplies and other items.
He was caught and arrested on April 19 on the shores of Lake Rotoma and pleaded guilty to 41 burglaries, two thefts and one escaping custody charge on Thursday last week.
On Friday, Judge Phillip Cooper sentenced Vincent to two more years on top of his existing four years. One year was for escaping custody charge and the other year for the remainder of the charges, to be served cumulatively.
